The Wartime Kitchen And Garden Program

I saw a couple of episodes - yes it is slow-paced - that can be soothing but I can also understand it might not be for everyone. I find the gardening bit interesting.

I saw this on the news and I thought it was 1 good but 2 odd that we had been talking about this very thing...
Jamie in fresh war on eating...
Jamie Oliver is launching yet another attack on the nation's eating habits-this time using the Second World War as his recipe inspiration...
The celeb chef is set to go back to Rotherham, the now-notorious scene of his School Dinners project, to shoot Jamie's Ministry or Food...
The real Ministry of Food tackled malnutrition in the war and created a much fitter population than today's...
He said: "If we can get people in one town cooking, I want to establish a blueprint across the whole country."
He said it may be difficult "but it's too important for us to give up."
well don't you think that's weird that we were all talking about doing this then up pop's Jamie Oliver saying he'll do it...I don't mind as I happen to like Jamie Oliver but I wondered if he looked in from time to time and got the idea from here...:)
Plans for 2009

i just read the same thing on sky news and instantly thought about this programme and this thread!...i thought he'd probably watched the above programme/or this thread! and got the idea!!!.totally a tog!:D0

i would love to watch this programme, but dont get it, even though we have qa sky box, we dont subscribe at the mo.... but was hoping to switch our broadband and have sky in one pacakage for £16 per month...
sorry back on topic..... i was just tried chanel 258 and there is a programme just about to start called dig for victory.... so might be of interest to some peeps...
i've been reading a lot of local books etc on wwII mainly for the fashion side of things etc..
i have the cookbook we'll eat again, havent done any of the recipes yet... but have been looking at it recently....
the main thing i take from these books etc.... is we have got it soo good these days... people can just go out and buy what ever they want, by spending money they havent got.... and we get things so easily, that we just dont appreciate things...and all these material things and takeaway food etc ....just gives us an illusion of happyness, and betterness.
i know that might sound a bit deep...lol... but whenever i used to listen to my grandparents ( i so miss them) talking about when they were young etc.... they allways seem to be laughing and smiling... and talking about the fun that they had, even though they had no money...and they took more pride in what they had/owned/ grew etc...
in one of my books it showed a picture of what food a family of 2 adults and one child would have in one month.... rationed basics and points food.. and he said that would not be enough to feed him for 5 days let alone feed 3 for one month...
right where is thriftlady's thread....i only managed to read bits of it....lol...
or could we start a new thread... with a new challenge....
i can used my cc41 items i have lol....Work to live= not live to work0 -

and I've found a shop in scarborough called SAVERS where I am going to start buying all my shampoo and conditioners cos fruitus is only £1.77 there but at boots or superdrug its around £3 poundish...I use bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar for cleaning the kitchen....works a treat...and lord sheridans wax for polishing...I have laminate flooring in the lounge and hall and lino tiles in the kitchen so washing up liquid and hot water to clean them...I don't buy much meat as we simply went off it...but what's wrong with eating some veg and gravy with yorky puds or having a fruit lunch nothing in my book...cant wait to see this new program of Jamie's...:)

i think one of the thing our household is guilty of is so much food wastage, if our meals were better planned i'm sure it wouldn;t happen so much, and even if it gets to the plate my OH and kids leave half of it....that just didn;t happen when i was a kid, i HAD to eat what i was given, i know i'm guilty of the above, but they'll be big changes coming soon as we're moving to an even more rural area, no supermarkets/shops or takeaways for 12 miles, and we'll have a big garage for a big freezer!! and i'm going to hide all the chocolate and treats as they only seem to last 2 days with my chocoholic OH!...oooh and i'm excited cos i'm getting a compost bin too....anyway, i am looking forward to see what jamie oliver does and no doubt his recipes/book will come with the programme too.totally a tog!:D0

Just a little reminder that the wartime kitchen and garden is starting tonight at 5pm on the Yesterday channel Freeview channel 12.
I was reading up on the new programme Ration Book Britain which is on Friday at 5pm - sadly it is only a one off show so I will try hard not to miss it.
Here is the blurb
This series sees chef and passionate British food lover Valentine Warner turn culinary time traveller to explore the food and recipes that kept the country alive during rationing.
Britain stood in Nazi Germany’s way, but to remain undefeated the country had to call on reserves of mental strength and toughness it didn’t know it had. To celebrate this unique Spirit of 1940, Yesterday has made a series of themed programmes – to be broadcast across the year – that takes viewers back in time 70 years to see what life was really like during the war years.
In a classic 1940s kitchen, Valentine uses the very same tips and tricks millions of housewives used to make what little food they had go a long way and taste delicious.
He’ll find that some recipes still have value today for people who want big flavour without a big bill, and he’ll also discover some recipes that are best left to the past. Rationing or no rationing, each dish Val cooks must be fit for the heroes of WWII because at the end of show he will host a meal for some very special invited guests.
With recipes and the stories behind them, Wartime Kitchen is the ultimate guide to living within your means, as well as posing the question: can modern day cooks learn anything from the Spirit of 1940?
Ration Book Britain is a one-off show on the 15th Jan, so no part 2 I'm afraid.
