council property and paying rent

I have been given the keys to my first property and have started to decorated it. I have paid a full months rent
I came to light that the sink in the kitchen is faulty and needs replacing
and the lounge floor needs taking up and re laying
should i really be paying rent on a property that is not ready for me to move into? I dont want to upset council and ask yet as thought i would check on here first! thanks i hope someone can help me

I would think once you start your tenancy (accept the keys) you are liable to pay rent as technically there is nothing to stop you from living in the place even though its not perfect but its livable..

If they'd scheduled in the time to check the property to that level, it might have added another 4-6 weeks to the time you had to wait to get a place... and if there'd been nothing wrong you'd have said you'd prefer to move in earlier and have that work done once you were in.

Yes. And it is ready for you to move into, there are just one or two niggles.

If you wanted perfection, you could easily rent privately and choose something absolutely perfect. It would probably cost you about 2-3x as much, you'd have had to pay £1000 up front to move in - and you might have to move on every 6 months when you're turfed out.

How many years did you wait to get this place?

So pay up. And on time. Or they'll turf you out and the next person will get it.
