  • Hi Madmum,

No, I only need the base unit. I've just looked at the Dell links that were kindly provided by the above poster and I am amazed what spec I can get for around £270! With Quidco in the mix, I think I will go for a Dell as they are such good value.

I got my new pc from Dell a few weeks ago and it's not bad at all for the price (base unit for £264 even after they'd stung me for £30 for XP!) Its so much faster than my 4 yr old PC which cost more than twice as much!

Bargainbabe a lot of people are anti-Vista, many of these people have never actually used it and are just jumping on the latest "Microsoft are evil" bandwagon. Vista is fine. In my opinion t looks a lot better than XP and it is more secure and it's a very stable OS. However before you buy a Vista PC do a bit of googling and check any peripherals you have will work with Vista.

One point is to make sure you get Vista Home Premium and NOT Home Basic as the basic version misses out on a lot of features. See here for details.

I've been using Vista for over a year and I would not go back to XP, obviously soem things are different and may take a little while to get used to but it's not difficult.

By the way if you are looking at the Inspiron 530 models and can stratch to it get the one with E4500 processor rather than the E2160, it is a fair bit faster.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • Hi Bill,

Thank you so much for taking the time to give your reply. It's most helpful and lot's of things to consider.

I actually have Vista on our new laptop and so it's been absolutely fine. But it's a shared laptop and the pc is mine so I want obviously want the best for the my small amount can buy.

I've bought some good laptops and PC's for my business on ebay. Obviously check rating, how long on ebay and use a credit card etc. Some very good prices on there, particularly if you will accept a refurbished PC that's say 6 month's old but comes with warrenty.
