TV sound on loud - is it controlled via remote control?
Try using the buttons on the TV itself. It may be that the remote buttons have gone faulty. The other possibility is the batteries in the remote are getting low. Try new batteries. Cann't guarantee these will solve the problem but maybe worth a try.
    "Sound" advice (groan)!

If this doesn't work - does the TV have a headphone socket? If so, you can pick up a pair of cheap PC type speakers (with a volume control) to keep you going for the time being?

Im glad someone else mentioned the egg in the car trick, my dad told me that ages ago, and I didnt believe him, until my car went kaput and I tried it. It worked too.
My dad has given me all these little tricks, so im now quite handy when needed!

I felt quite smug when a friends car wouldnt start one day, 4 guys were all looking at it, I identified the problem (broken lead from battery), and managed to fix it with nothing but a screwdriver and a little metal hook with a spring on the other end (a random yet otherwise useless item that dad kindly left in his mini toolbag which he gave me). This was also at 3am on a bitterly cold night. As I said, exceptionally smug!

Is this a short term 'keep it going until you can get a new car' type fix, or what? Sounds messy. I can imagine going to a garage for a new radiator and they would say 'what have you done here?' and have a load of fun trying to clean your pipes out!

Hi ya, thanks for all the replies. I'm in a much better frame of mind about this today. I think I was just having a bad week (not long back from holidays and having the holiday blues) and I think this just "tipped me over the edge" If I put things back into perspective, I think I was over reacting!! Life is like that at times, and they say things happen in 3's. I do look after most of my stuff, as i do work hard for things but there are some jobs I wouldn't think of doing (descaling an iron for example!) I think I might get one of those handy tips and hints books - just for future reference!

The Dyson was replaced and I sold the broken one for spares at a car boot sale. It was advertised as broken and I got £35.00 for it, so I made a bit of cash there. I didn't bother contacting Dyson as it was about 4 years old, so i didn't think that there would be much point in doing so.

I've checked the TV and the remote control is fine. i've tried pressing the buttons on the TV set itself and it's still stuck. As I say, it's not an emergency at the moment, and it's quite nice not having the TV on in bedroom, although I may be saying something different when I want to watch Eastenders and the football is on! It is quite an old one anyway. It's a Sony TV which was given to me when my Great Uncle died approx 5 years ago. He hadn't had it all that long, but it was a freebie at the time anyway, so I guess it's lasted quite well. I might look around for a cheap one depending on how much it costs to get it looked at. Besides, I am enjoying reading at the moment, something I haven't found time to do, for along while, so maybe the TV can wait.

I got the radiator fixed on the car over the weekend. Decided against the "egg" idea! Like lipidicman, decided that it sounded toooo messy and i didn't fancy having to explain myself when it was questioned! I'll bear it in mind though, in case it happens again - fingers crossed it won't though!

I have a friend who is a mechanic who comes in extremely handy at times such as these. He put a new one in and it cost me £80 so it wasn't the end of the world. I've had the car for 3 years now and it hasn't cost me much over the years, so I guess that I can't really complain. I know that it probably could have been repaired or I could have got one from the scarp yard or somewhere like that, but I thought if it's replaced at least it's brand new and theres less chance of it breaking down again.

As for, Jo, I was rather impressed that you managed to fix your car problem - up until Friday i didn't know how to lift the bonnet up on my car! The most I know to do is to fill it up with petrol and even then I forget which petrol I use - and yes, I have put the wrong petrol into the car on occasion!!!

This is frightening - you NEED to know how to check the water and oil. Either of these (or the wrong fule) could mean you need to budget for a NEW CAR!

Also, I am a little confused about the posts here. Is Amie_007 and JAMIEDODGER the same person posting under two usernames?

I do try to look after things - although admittedly the car could do with a bit of TLC. Has been overdue for a service, so this could probably have been avoided, although the car is now 5 years old and on 54,000 so I guess this may be around the time that wear and tear start to show on the parts I guess.

I would suggest to your mechanic friend that he replaces the timing belt on your car soon. Most cars require this done at 50,000 - 60,000 mile or every five years. Might cost a few bob but if it breaks, the engine will require major work & will cost a lot more.
