    It's "that day" again !

MAIL day - as much as I disagree - I'll post - quoting my Saturday entry

I TOTALLY disagree with its use (I'll use others BUT NOT THESE) in establishments that cannot claim the money back (eg Tesco, Asda) because they are not members of The Booksellers Association.

    Why bring this up again?

You don't agree we should use a coupon in stores that seemingly are happy to accept them. (Yet repeatedly post to alert us about their existence - some sort of hypocrisy/double standards here).

All shoppers can be expected to do is hand the coupons in, and it is up to the shop whether or not they honour them. Shoppers can't be expected to find out which associations the shops they go to belong to.

Why do people have to be so rude?
Quoia clearly stated she was posting about the mail voucher because "If i don't someone else will." It isn't double standards at all.

And I completely agree. Also, comparing the DM book voucher to a sainsbury's spend and save voucher is ridiculous. They accept S&S vouchers in the hope of attracting £50 or whatever worth of custom from sainsbury's. Its like giving the shopper 10% off, in the hope they will prefer Tesco to Sainsbury and continue to shop there.

As is often said on here, couponing is a privilege, not a right, and silly people abusing the system are not only spoiling it for themselves, but for the rest of us as well.

There will come a time in the not too distant future when this newspaper and the magazine thread will be a distant memory because there is no longer any point posting about coupons.
    Don't say you weren't warned!!!!:D

    Are you referring to me?

If so please tell what part of my post is rude?

You complain that anyone using this coupon in a shop that is happy to accept it is "abusing the system".

In fact there is a great abuse of the system going on, but that is by the retailers, not the shoppers!

Purely for profit, the retailers happily accept coupons as cash (disregarding such salient points as the coupon is only intended to be used as part payment for the item it is advertising).

Then truly abuse the manufacturer who originated the coupon by claiming its value plus a handling fee when they never sold the product to the customer they took the coupon off!

You may be right that there will be no newspaper coupons in future - haven't you noticed their number is drastically reduced since this daily thread started appearing?

Yes thebrow it is a good clear bar code and scans ok as I have
just been to tescos and used one
  • I am so grateful to those who keep this thread up to date and all their hard work - but (guess you saw that coming) - I feel uncomfortable about being lectured. Tesco are perfectly well aware of how many DM book coupons are passed through their tills, my guess is that they are happy to accept this whether or not they get the money back. The prices we pay for their goods bear no relation to their cost to Tesco, if they sold everything in the store half price they would still be making a huge profit. Therefore if people go to Tesco because they take coupons, Tesco know that they are still gaining extra business even taking into account the coupon usage (IYSWIM). It's also my belief that this forum and other shopping forums give Tesco free advertising that would otherwise cost them a fortune. I never shopped there until I discovered MSE. All of this is my own opinion and doesn't make book coupon usage right or wrong, I just think let people make up their own minds.

Quentin I do not wish to row with you. I felt your attirude was rude, accusing Quoia of hypocrisy

I completely agree that tesco abuses itsa customers. That isnt the issue. my take on it is, the longer I can use coupons the better. If tesco had a cast in stone policy of coupon acceptance forever, id say go for it, and would be off to buy 10 copies of The mail. I just don't wantthe bubble to burst and giving in coupons the retailer cannot redeem ( which IS coupon abuse whether you like it or not) will cause just that.

Like I say i am not becoming embroilled in a row. This happened at our tesco last yr and they would not accept ANY coupons for a whole six months. Id rather give in a few each time than 10 DMs now and them go back to that

Sorry, but I don't follow your arguments

To post about a coupon being available, and on 2 separate days to make an issue about people using the coupon certainly smacks of both hypocrisy and double standards, and there is nothing rude in pointing that out.
I completely agree that tesco abuses itsa customers. That isnt the issue.

As I never brought that up, I don't really know what point you are trying to make.
giving in coupons the retailer cannot redeem ( which IS coupon abuse whether you like it or not)

How can it possibly be abuse.

How are we to know which coupons they can or cannot redeem. All we can do is hand them in when shopping. Around here shops happily accept each others coupons, and clearly cannot redeem them.

And if you need 10 copies of this particular coupon (why not just buy the one then pass it on when you've read it), then you can get them free from the Daily Mail's website, so don't bother buying 10 mails.
