Bidding increments on ebay?

Does anyone know whether the bids have to be over a certain amount before the increments go up to 50p? For example, if I bid £5 on an item, how much will the item go up to before the next amount that someone can bid goes up to 50p eg when it says 'you must bid more than £5.50'?
Does that make sense? I hope it does!

once you hit £5 u can then only increase in 50 increments, under 5 and above £1 and you're allowed a 20p increase0

Which is another reason why it's good to bid a few pence over a round figure.
If a starting price is 99p and the first bidder puts in £5, the item will still show 99p with 1 bid.
If bidder 2 then enters £5, they will raise the listing to £5, with 2 bids, but will not be the highest, as bidder 1 entered the same amount earlier.
At this point bidder 2 needs to enter £5.50 as a next bid, but if they had put £5.01 as their 1st bid, then the item would show £5.01 with 2 bids, and they would be in the lead.
It's only 49p at this stage, but if you are bidding £3k on a car or caravan, then the next increment is £100. £3000.01 could potentially save you £99.99 on winning.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -
so if I bid £8 as my max bid and then a sniper comes and bids £8.03 right at the last second, that bid shouldn't have been allowed? Right?
**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

No, they bid more than you did, butit depends on what the listing price was showing at the time the snipe came in. If it was showing £6 or £7, then £8.03 was enough to beat you, and the increment.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -

Only if it is on £8 at the time you bid or anywhere between £7.53 and £8.03. If you have bid £8 but it is still with you at £4 say, then that £8.03 could come along and trump you perfectly legit, or even £8.01 which is really irritating!0 -
Which reminds me - who was that muppet who tried to argue that sniping didn't work?!?!
I think you found out the hard way that it most certainly does!<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -

That don't quite make sense Steve, if it was on £6 or £7 then an £8.03 bid WOULD beat your £8 bid!0 -

Started to say one thing, then got distracted. (by an idiot ASQ as it happens!)<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -
