No, they are all likely to be very expensive because the statistics show that inexperienced drivers have lots of claims.
You might be very good but unfortunately they work from past experience.

You could try Quinn direct, but the best thing to do is to get the smallest and cheapest car you can to start off with. If it's a very cheap car then you could consider the risk of going 3rd party only or 3rd party fire and theft rather than fully comp.

I have the same problem trying to get some insurance for my 17 yr old son who has just started lessons.....
His mate has a 1993 1.043cc VW Polo for sale at £600...so I just got some quotes on that compare site....for just 3rd party fire and theft the cheapest is £1673 for a 15 year old car worth £600!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Any suggestions?

Just did Quinn as suggested by lisyloo and they came in at £1220...quite a bit cheaper...about 25%...

...try puting a parent/older family member as a 'named' driver....I repeat a 'named' driver....& see what that does to the quote(s)?

I tried that...and it went up when I put myself on!

  • Try 4YoungDrivers, then the cheapest you get, actully ring up the insurance company and you'll get it a bit cheaper. Also putting a Female family member with a decent no claims and no convictions as a named driver had been known to bring the price down a bit.

Thanks, but your link didn't work, so I found it on Google https://qx.insureyourmotor.com/index.php
BUT in their list of dates it only goes back to 1990, my son is just 17, born 19/01/1991...do they only insure from 18 years of age?

  • Sorry just changed it, should work now. The link is for what looks like a sister company, thats does only insure drivers over the age of 18, but i got insured through 4youngdrivers and i was only 17 at the time.

What about getting them a 50cc mopped to begin with.

In my day (now I sound old ;)) we all had mopeds as we couldn't afford cars.
I think we learnt some road sense and you can't go faster than 30 mph.

I agree.....but with all the potholes in Sheffield roads I wouldn't be happy with my son on a moped....it was a bit different when we were young....;)

  • When my wife had just passed (although she was 22) the cheapest quote we got was was from 'Screentrade' although now, curiously as she has more driving experience etc it is nowhere near the cheapest quote...go figure!
  • We had the same problem with my daughter, very expensive insurance how ever we did alot of shopping round and had diffrent quotes ranging from nearly £700 to £1300...obviusly she is female so she does get it cheaper for that fact but we got an excellent quote through Direct line (my partner is already with them so she got a disscount for that and 10% disscount ontop for doing it all online.

Her Quote was £672 which for first time drivers is excellent. Try getting quotes through parents insurance companys and alway always haggle.
Happiness is not having what you want...but wanting what you have!!!
