  • We had exactly the same problem from British Gas.

We couldn't make head nor tail of their final bill for around £200 either and I used to be a company financial manager..........

When I asked them to review it, they took about 6 weeks, then sent me a bill for over £6000 (this was more than the entire electricity use in the four years we had lived there). It goes without saying that that bill didn't make sense either.

I made a formal complaint and asked them to provide a detailed statement of all our electricity use and the payments made by monthly DD since we moved into the property.

Whilst they didn't do this we eventually ended up with a refund of over £1100.

I'd be lying if I said that this 'final' bill made any more sense than the others. The dates were wrong, the payments were wrong, there was nothing that I could interpret correctly.

For me it was more or less a simple matter to work out the reading when we moved in and calculate the difference to when we moved out. I took off all the payments that we had made and had a rough idea of what they should have owed us. I say rough because of all the different tariffs that apply for different unit use.

I reckoned optimistically that they owed us around £200, so needless to say I didn't bother to challenge the final bill.

This final bill had been calculated by their 'specialist disputes team'

I just wonder how many people are overpaying due to this incompetence.

One final thing. I had transferred the new house supplier to British Gas. As I was getting threatening letters about the £6000 debt, I transferred the supply to someone else just in case we got cut off. It might be worth considering this if you disagree with your final bill and are going to have a protracted fight on your hands. It took us around 4 months to finally get things resolved.

I just trying to fathom out how they have got this figure when £300 is what most people would pay in a year.

Everything in the flat was switched off at the mains when nobody was home. Only things that were on were fridge & freezer. Storage heating was in the flat and they were on during the colder months (Nov - Feb) but I thought they only charged at night, when it costs less. What a joke.

    Sickened !!

The point of this is the fact we have already paid £160 by direct debit and they still want us to pay £298.49 to settle the bill.

So that's £458.49 for 7 months in a flat 4 months of those 7 months was in the summer and with no heating turned on at all. I just cannot work it out.
