I suppose we are hoping that if all goes well we might eventually aquire a couple more properties in the future to secure a decent retirement as we don't really go for pensions.
Why do you think that property investment is a great whilst pensions are not?
    Happy chappy
  • though it's not a game for the get rich quick amateur, as far as buy-to-let goes the news seems to be increasingly positive, - Here's a few recent articles to that effect:

Balance these articles with the far more articles that advise extreme caution in a hugely over-valued market – as do many of the posters on this forum.
  • From what I have seen of new build "luxury" flats especially two bedders ..they are vastly overpriced.. I am shocked that people actually buy them at these prices . I would say that they tend to be overpriced by as much as 33% eg 250k for a prop, that if older would sell for £180k. Why does nobody ever build anything but luxury flats??

    Hi everyone,
my wife and I are thinking of entering the world of buy to let but just wondered if we could get some sound advice from these forums first.

You could put all your money on number 37 on a roulette wheel. Less risk.

I was specifically talking about the BTL investment market, in which the atmosphere is largely upbeat, for the serious investor at least...

So, just to avoid confusion, let me get this straight:

People upbeat about BTL (serious BTL investors), are upbeat about BTL. That's kind of a self referential, closed system, isn't it?

How do people who aren't in BTL up to their necks read the situation? Are they piling in to this superb business opportunity?

The general commercial property market was more than a bit upbeat this time last year, and the guys who bought HSBC towers for a billion quid though they had a blinding deal (for 3 or 4 months anyway...).

All sorts of valuation scams been going on in the commercial sector....begining to unravel now, but they don't make the news.
    Anecdotal...so no links sorry.

Don't go near retail property investments for a while....lots of retailers on the edge of a cliff at the mo; their overpriced/ overvalued leases are another ticking time bomb.

Panarama covered it last week. A bit heavy on the "poor helpless consumer" side. No-one entering into a high risk transaction willing to borrow hundreds of thousands to make hundreds of thousands is free of blame.

If you want a good example from someone on this board then take a look at this thread:

Poor sod got into it and at 26 is losing money fast and could be upto £70k down at the moment.
