PSP cannot read disc

Hello and apologies if this was posted before, but I did a search in this section and found no help.

My son's PSP is just under 2 years old and was left switched off since around Xmas. Now it does not seem to be able to read ANY of our discs displaying the message "Cannot read disc".

I can still see and work around the menu and a little revolving circle in the bottom right corner of the screen which usually appears as the game is loading. However, after a couple of minutes, the message comes up again.

I removed the battery and tried resetting it to factory settings as suggested in some websites, but it has not made any difference.

Unfortunately, I cannot send it to Sony as the screen cracked sometime ago and I had it replaced by a non-Sony dealer.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Also if anyone knows of a reputable place I could send it for repair.

Thanks a bunch

How about asking the retailer under the Sale of Goods Act?

  • I bought this whilst on holiday in Canada, I'm afraid :(
Would Sony UK repair it regardless? I have no plans to return to Canada soon!

Ahh might make things a bit more difficult. I don't think Sony are obligated to repair items bought from outside the EU but it depends what their warranty conditions are. I'd imagine they may have a global warranty. Thing is you've got nothing to lose by asking them. The fault does seem to be independant of the replacement screen anyway.

  • do you think the problem may be 'internal' rather than with the laser itself? sorry, but I'm no expert and so don't know the technical words.....

Either could be possible with the symptoms you describe. And either way Will require a repair job on it.

Pop open the drive. If you look into the slot where the game disc goes, you'll see the laser on the right side. Get a dry cotton bud, place it on the lense gently and rotate it a few times keeping it in contact with the lense. Cleans off the dust and grime. Now try a game.

icon1.gifFree replacement for broken PSP or PS3?
Apparently Sony are running an exchange program for faulty PSP and PS3s. Even if it's out of warranty [Edit: May not work if they ask and you remember buying it more than a year ago....], as long as the warranty sticker is intact (you haven't opened the case to fiddle with the insides) and you've got the battery and charger then they'll send out a refurbished one via parcelforce and pick up your dud one to take back. This is all free of charge (less the phone call). It's said this even covers broken screens.
I noticed this while surfing eBay and noticed lots of people selling this info for anywhere between a couple of quid and twenty. After digging around a bit I found this handy info from a concerned eBay member..... http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/PSP-AND-PS...00000004878687
Sony's number for this is 08705 998877, or try the cheaper geographic number 01923 653598.

This might help the PSP'S THAT ARE STILL IN WARRANTY .
