Car Insurance Query

My car insurance provider gave me an extra year's no claims bonus as an incentive to stay. Can I take this with me when I switch providers? Also, can I switch half way though the year as my insurance is not up for renewal until August?

If the extra year is already included i.e. you've already earnt it then YES (you will need to check your last renewal notice to see if it's included).
If they are offering it to you at the end of the year then NO.
Also, can I switch half way though the year as my insurance is not up for renewal until August?

Yes you can but you will have to go with whatever no claims you had in August 2007.
You won't earn anything from August 2007 until now.
You may also have to pay an admin fee for cancellation which can be anything between £20 and £75, so you need to assess whether it's worthwhile.

The "extra year's bonus" they gave you was in fact a discount on your premium, rather than adding a year's claim free driving to your insurance record.

So your renewal notice (which you need to prove your number of years claim free to transfer your no claim bonus) will detail the number of years no claims you have, and this won't have this "extra year" added to it.
