I have no buildings/contents insurance whatsoever on the flat.

Glad to hear your Surveyors are on the case Amy. I laughed at the Council's Surveyor's comments, it was probably him that oversaw the build and therefore doesn't want to fork out! I be tempted to claim mal-administration against the local authority for making fictitious claims, its not professional and its a fat fib!
