Where to stay in Rome?

The Tubbos are going to Rome on October. Flights are sorted but need a hotel. Previous posts and suggestions from friends are conflicting. Generally the consensus is to stay near the terminii station as its fairly central to most things but others have suggested that it can be a seedy area at night. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (we have 2 toddlers if its relevant)

Well, I am sure you will get conflicting advice again, but Termini area is safe enough (I never felt threatened and I was there on my own)
I think it only gets seedy at night, certainly not during the day (and with toddlers, I am sure you wont be out late at night)
The advantage of staying there is that all the buses for places to go start from there (bus station is o/s train station) and both metro lines run through Termini
(for going to Vatican, Spanish Steps, Colosseum etc).
Yes there are other nicer places to stay but very expensive, it depends on your budget.
Just my opinion, but I am sure there will be others.
Have a fun trip, Rome is LOVELY and your toddlers are going to scream when they see all the ice cream / gelati shops !****************************0 -
Now you might think this is weird but, as accomadation in rome is so shockingly expensive, but have you thought about staying in one of the many convents? Lots of convents and monasteries have started doing b+b in europe to bring in some extra cash. They're normally lots cheaper and often right in the centre of the action, so to speak. My sister has just done this herself in Rome and found it was great. She had own room/bath etc and breakfast (the italian breakfasts are tiny apparently!), and was also given a key to let herself in at night although some places don't do this and have a curfew of around 10pm, but if you have toddlers that might not be a problem.
It sounds crackers but nuns are lovely (we have one in the family ) and you don't have to be religious to stay there or anything (my sis isnt).
Just a thought

A couple of points:
I don't think hotels in Rome are shockingly expensive - in fact it is one of the best value capital cities in Europe.
Loads of hotels are within a few hundred yards of the Termini, which is OK during the day - but as in most of Rome beware Gypsy children pickpockets and scooter borne bag snatchers.
Rome is a fabulous city, but frankly my kids when toddlers would have been bored silly. Wonderful buildings etc etc but it ain't Disney.
I would try to find a hotel with say, a swimming pool, where the kids can have some fun.0 -
do you have any links or info on the above. Thanks!smam21 wrote:Now you might think this is weird but, as accomadation in rome is so shockingly expensive, but have you thought about staying in one of the many convents? I know she saw it suggested in a lonely planet guide, but she actually stayed in a convent which was of the same order of our relative which is how she found out about it. I came across a website which as soon as i find it I'll post

We stayed in an apartment, there are lots rented out by the day all over Rome. I think we used sleepinitaly.com or rentalinrome.com, both seemed reasonable.0

We're going next week and got a great deal via https://www.alpharooms.com, central Atlantic hotel, two nights for £64 for two people. Not sure what the hotel is like yet though!
Venere.com seem to do very well when compared with other hotel sites when booking in Italy.0
