I don't think a couple of the comments in here are very constructive, even if you do feel that the OP is working somewhere that doesnt fit in with his core skills or beliefs.

With regards line management I think it's great, if it's stuck to. Confusion in my office reigns when more senior managers delegate stuff to bottom staff directly on a regular basis. Go through the heirarchy !!!!!!! It means I have to continually update managers on what I've been tasked with whereas they would have a perfectly good idea of what I have on my plate if proper channels of communication were followed.

Likewise if you have a problem with aspects of work line managers have a responsibility to look after those directly under their control. If they do not take your concerns seriously, then you should consider raising a grievance.

I love line management - I wish more places stuck to it though - I worked for a place where line management meant that any manager (especially the personnel manager) could email you with demands but if you responded with a question, had a message back saying always go through your line manager with queries.

Then another place where there is a kind of line management but any manager can tell you what to do. Unfortunately if another manager disagreed with that decision then they had it out with the employee rather than the other manager - total chaos

Also to the OP, if you are not happy with your line manager then the system is supposed to be flexible enough for an employee to go to their line manager's line manager.
