The customer is always right. Unless you are being physically threatened, you are required to be polite at all times. They are the customer, so they pay your wages.

You can always request that your supervisor, or another more senior member of staff, comes and deals with rude customers if you feel you can't continue the conversation in a professional manner.

Golden rule of Customer Service: Thou shalt never be rude to a customer, however vile they are.

Sadly when I work in the afternoons the manager has gone home so you have to do it all yourself and yet you have no real authority.

You are the sole member of staff in the entire library at that time?

No, many others are there but no one has authority.

So go for length of service; there will be people who have worked there for longer than you and who have better people skills. Ask them to intervene if necessary. Who locks up the library if there is no management around? I smell a rat ...

Sadly the one who is senior person in service wise is the iff one with drink. I think even having a self appointed person on length of service would deeply upset the true managers as that is heavly standing on their feet.

Library porters exist for that function of closing up.

Oh well - you'll just have to put up with it then, or change jobs.

I'd love to see a reality drama set in Phils Library. Thrills and spills.

Imagine if he were ever to find himself working in a high-pressure environment.....
