Wired network with poor speed

Hi all, I have a Netgear router which has a PS3, 360 and main PC attached to it via cat 5 cables. I have wired a further cat 5 cable through the wall and back in upstairs as I was getting cheesed off with the wireless dongle playing silly !!!!!!s. Now the PC downstairs is absolutely fine. I have a 6 meg broadband connection and it's as you would expect. The PC upstairs downloads files at the high speed (ie downloading iTunes, running speedtests etc) but normal browsing is appalling and I can't log in to MSN messenger at all. I have read it might be a firewall problem with the router, but I can't understand why my main PC downstairs is fine and the one upstairs seems like it has a massive bottleneck while browsing ... I don't have any extra firewall software installed on that PC and I'm baffled ! Any help gets a thanks !!

  • I would be tempted to find out what was running in the background, and also to do anti-spyware checks

These kind of problems tend to be from physical issues rather than software slowing down services. The older machines background apps etc did make a difference, but todays hardware as long as you have a decent amount of memory installed should cope easily.

Look into your cables, any cheap ethernet adapters and lastly your router setup that it isnt prioritising or indeed struggling with how you have configured it.

I reckon it must be a config problem with the router or PC but I can't get my head round it. File downloads are fine, top speed etc, but normal browsing and Messenger isn't happening at all ! Computers ...

Update .... the activity light on the router for that ethernet connection rapidly blinks all the time even when the computer upstairs is switched off .... no matter which port on the router it's plugged in to.

I am thinking - will try and install a network card rather than the onboard one and see if that helps. If not I dunno ! Any more thoughts are very very welcome !

if the updates did it in the first palce there is an option to roll back to the old driver in device manager

  • Try a new network cable for the faulty machine.
