Don't worry about the re-posting, the search engine is quite fickle in my experience.
At the very bottom of the wiki page you posted above, there a link to a Disney 50th Birthday Party for Kermit held in 2005 (suggesting 1955) but it won't load as I'm not in USA!

According to "movies.yahoo.com", while a freshman at University of Maryland in 1955, Jim Henson created a 5 minute puppet show for WRC.TV featuring a prototype version of Kermit. Kermit was apparently named after Jim's boy hood school friend Kermit Scott. So it's definitely 1955.0 -
