What wireless router for Virgin Media

Following my trials and tribulations below, I have decided to get a new wireless router

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=717847

My current wireless set up is as follows:

Virgin Media 20mb broadband
"Webstar by Scientific Atlantic" modem (provided by Virgin) connected to Telewest TV Drive
Modem connected to Netgear wireless router "mr814v2tw".

The router was provided by Telewest free of charge 3 years ago.

However I now want to connect an additional laptop wirelessly, so the internet can be accessed at the same time as my desktop. I am unable to do this because of firmware (or something) in the Telewest router which only allows 1 computer to connect at a time.

Therefore, I am looking to buy a replacement for the router, which will allow me to use 2 computers and add more, eg printers, at a later date. I want to make good use of my 20mb broadband as well as being highly secure.

Please can anyone recommend a new wireless router to me as I have no idea which one would be most compatible to my set up requirments?

I'm not looking to spend more than £50.

Thanks in advance.

I followed the link and read the reviews, and it seems that a lot of people are having trouble with it. One poster there suggested that the product has changed and been made worse.

    What are your thoughts?

I use a Netgear WGR614 with Virgin and have done for many years. When Telewest use dto sell wireless kit this is what they used to supply so at least their support staff may have an idea what you're on about if you call them and you're using one.

Does your broadband relaly go through your TVDrive/V+ STB? I thought you could only get very limited speeds that way.

Sorry to hijack this thread but have a question (probably a stupid one too)!

I have virgin media for TV, phone & Broadband. I recently bought a 54MB WIRELESS DSL/CABLE ROUTER from Virgin themselves. Can anyone tell me if I still need the modem originally supplied by virgin or can the connection be put directly into the ROUTER??

I am not sure and just dont want to do any thing wrong. Thanks

EDIT - I meant the cable be put direct into the router & therefore get rid of the modem (opps)
  • as long as you got a modem it should be fine:rotfl:

On an earlier thread I mentioned this as a solution.

My local computer shop sells them for £24.99 and says that they are recommended by Telewest Engineers.
