Total Loss - Policy Cancelled

I'm with Admiral and my parter had an accident in my car (as a named driver on the policy). Admiral have sent me a letter notifying me that they consider the car to be a total loss, also contained within this letter was a point telling me that the policy has therefor been CANCELLED. I am at a loss as to how they can do this. Surely you enter into a contract for 12 months and they shoul give you the oppertunity to add a replacement vehical to the policy for the remaining term - Obviously with any additional premium due if the car is a higher insurance group for ex. After 3 months of the policy I feel cheeted.
Does anybody have any advice or any experience of this that may help how I approch this with Admiral.

Unfortunately for you Admiral are quite entitled to do this.
The contract is to insure a particular car for 12 months, not the other way round (i.e. you are not buying insurance for 12 months on whatever vehicle is on the policy at the time). If that particular car is a total loss and the claim is settled accordingly then in law the contract has been 'discharged by performance', and the full annual premium is due.
Many insurers will allow a substitute vehicle onto the policy in such circumstances; however, they are not obliged to do so and as such it would only ever be offered as a courtesy.
You can certainly complain to Admiral, you've got nothing to lose by doing so other than time, but technically Admiral have done nothing wrong here.0
