I'm having a prob with my pc which runs win xp pro. when it is left idle for some time (ie 20 mins or so) the HDD starts crunching away and the light comes on and stays on. However, nothing happens on screen and I have no idea what it is doing!
I have Microsoft Antispyawre and Norton Internet Pro installed and I@ve updated and scanned so I know it probably isn't a virus. what do you think? any ideas?

Have you checked in task manager it may be a virus scanner or disk defragger running in the background.
No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you0 -
have you had a screen saver and deleted it , cant help wondering if the path is still active and the computer is busy looking to send you into a screen saver .
try adjusting your power settings also , set to never on all .
my first thought was spyware .... but they usually get to work as fast as possible not after 20 mins .0 -
It's probably just Windows' Indexing Service.0

Could be the virus scanner working or XP trying to update?

Women are all evil I tells ya... EVIL!!!
On a serious note about your PC problem I think that it must be Windows' Indexing Service working in the background. It makes sure all your files are indexed so you can search for them easily and quickly
