Young driver - provisional - cheap insurance

Hi all
Thought i would pass on my experiences.

My 2 sons (21 and 25) both need to learn to drive, one lives with his mother, the other lives with his partner.

I wanted to add them both to my Insurance (04 Skoda Octavia estate 130hp TDI) current renewal £300 Fully comp with 9 years NCD.

After many searches using all the comparison sites and call backs from brokers the best deal i could get was more than £800.
Many assumed that the boys would be driving my car whilst I used my wifes ( the much mentioned fronting problem).
They would not accept that as provisional drivers they would not be using the car on their own nor would they recognise the fact that neither lived with us.
Both have only held provisional licences for a matter of days.

As a last stab I tried Norwich Union web site.

Their proposal page has much more flexibility, I could specify that the boys did not live with me. I was not charged extra because my wife has a car and I am a named driver on that one.

So.............

I was offered Fully comp with protected NCD, European cover for £515 AND £55 cash back for a new customer and web submission.

MAX excess is £320.

I have always avoided NU because in the past their quotes have always been very expensive.

Just goes to prove how things can change when your circumstances change!!!

Just put interest did you try direct line?

Direct line are best for new drivers as they give named driver a chance to build up a no claims discount making it cheaper to get insurence in the future.

    Direct Line - yes
They suffered in the same way that most of the others did, in that they had no means to specify the boys lived at another address and therefore were not going to be a fronting risk.

And yes their NCD can be claimed seperately once they get their own cars.

Just for future reference, your youngest son (and any driver on whose insurance he is covered) might be able to get a better insurance quote once they have passed their test if they undergo the PASS PLUS scheme. A lot of insurance companies participate in this scheme, which ensures that newly qualified young drivers undergo additional training such as motorway driving, driving in the dark, etc. to increase their competance. Google "PASS PLUS" if you need more info.
