Present ideas for friend in debt...

Hello,
I have a friend and his birthday is coming up soon. However he's in quite a lot of debt and it's causing him to worry. While I can't afford to pay off his debts I was wondering if there was something I could get for his birthday that would help the situation... anyone have any good ideas?
Thanks

  • A copy of Martins book! Or maybe a hamper of essentials that he would always use - toiletries, cleaning products, etc etc.
Also check out the Special Occasions board and maybe post the question there too, they usually have great gift ideas

    Hi KatieQ

Any present would be good as it’s the thought that counts at the end of the day.
If you want to try and give him some support to help with his debts suggest he tries our online advice facility called Debt Remedy, where he can complete a financial statement and be provided with advice on the best way to deal with the situation. This may give him some ideas on what he could do to help deal with his debts and hopefully lift that worry off his shoulders. If he needs support point him in this sites direction, and get him on the forums so he can see people are in similar situations and are working towards been debt free.

Wish your friend a happy birthday from us all

  • Supermarkets do giftcards now, so you could put an amount on there and he wouldn't have to worry about having enough money for food!! May sound boring but my mum loves this!

I would say Martins book too!
  • I'd go with the gift card, he can then get himself a bottle of wine & something nice to eat to treat himself!!
That's what I'd like anyway, & if there's nothing he wants he can use the card to get his normal food & use the money he would have spent on food for something he does want, or to put towards his debt!

  • I'm not very inventive with presents but when I am struggling something practical like a hamper of toiletries or my fave food treats would be much appreciated and last long after the actual birthday.

How making a token up for say an hour of your time to help go through his/her finances and see if you can make any savings on friends behalf - could be worth much more than any other pressie u could buy!;)
Who says I have to be normal? :p

Giftcard if he likes to cook, or you want him to treat himself or, if you like to cook, invite him around for dinner and do him a slap up birthday meal. It doesn't have to cost you a fortune - pop over to the OS board for loads of budget ideas for a 3 course dinner.

Alternatively, something like a container with a DVD you know he wants, a huge bag of popcorn, a bottle of wine and some chocolates for a night in a the movies (unless Blockbuster do some kind of voucher?)

  • I'd agree - Martin's book! Also read a few by - can I mention him on here?! - Alvin Hall.
