Abbey account transfer

In January I started an account transfer from A&L to Abbey, mostly in protest at A&L's new overdraft charges.
I went to my local branch, filled in the forms, and dated the transfer for the first of March. I told the staff the transfer had to happen then, as I thought it was too close to the start of Feb to go through. The staff at the branch agreed.
Despite all of this Abbey transfered my account on the first of Feb. I've got no cheque book, no details of what DD's & SO's have been transfered, and only got my ATM card two days before the switch.
They cancelled my mortgage in Jan, but did not set up the new DD to start in Feb, but in March.
My mortgage did not get paid, I don't know yet what other payments were missed. Nationwide, who provide my mortgage, only take payments by cheque, or at a branch. As I have no cheque book I had to take time off work. I'm now worried about the late payment, and how it will affect my mortgage & credit file.
I called Abbey on monday, and was told a manager would return my call. Nothing happened. I called on tuesday, and was told a manager would return my call. Guess what?
Apparently I cannot stop the switch now, and they are closing my A&L account.
Obviously I need to switch away, but I am worried about the number of credit searches on my file, as in the last six months I have movd my joint account & applied for two credit cards.
Rant over.
