Installing a toilet

Hi all
I have just bought a house which needs a great deal of work, not least the skanky bathroom! I did have a plumber round who said he could fit the new bathroom - I decided to hold fire as my ambitious boyf says he would like to try and fit it himself (he is quite good at all that luckily). Anyway, I was a bit worried about the toilet as we want to replace it but it is an old one with the cistern connected to the bowl by a long pipe - not right up high but about half way up the wall. Additionally the soil pipe goes down into the floor right where the base of the new toilet would go. The plumber said that to move this soil pipe back and put in the new toilet would cost £300 alone.
I have since chatted with other DIYers who have been shocked and said surely its something we could do ourselves. Can any experts give me and the other half some advice?
Thanks in advance....

Hi
Just sorted my toilet ( just the same as yours when I moved in )
What you need to do first is find a toilet pan with a close couple ( cistern that sits on top of the pan )
then find one thats going to sit over the hole ( waste pipe ) so the pan would have the hole inside it and not showing ( I bought a remo pan & cistern from plumbline )
Now here's the tricky bit If the sticks up through the floor ( mine was and it was a cast-iron bend ) you have to measure carefully that the waste pipe will fit into the internal side of the pan along with a wc multi-quick ( straight pan connector), (goes into inside of outlet and outside of pan connection ) then cut the waste pipe flush with the ground ( or adjust the height according to the wc pan connector and what your putting down on your bathroom floor ( tiles or carpet etc) & if it's going under the pan) I put down tiles and needed 12mm but with the pan connector and outlet of pan I needed it flush with ground ( waste pipe )
If you decide to do it and it's cast-iron your cutting you will need a grinder and 3 maybe 4 metal cutting blades.
But please take note wear goggles, gloves and mask and cover every other thing up as you will have cast-iron fillings everywhere and you will be black when you finish cutting.
If your man is as good as you say at D.I.Y he will manage it no probs, just take his time and measure, measure and measure again to make sure its right before doing it. You only get one go if its a concrete floor the waste comes through or you will have to dig it out with a T72.
Also please not ,take care not to break or crack it or you will be digging it out!
Hope this has helped you.If you have a problem! Build a bridge N get over it! :hello:0 -
I will pass this onto the boyf, thanks very much.
For info the toilet is actually upstairs and there are floorboards - dont know if this makes a difference?0 -
