Medical Retirement/Civil Service

I was following this as I was in a similar position, see earlier posts. I wondered if there was something different about the CS as this is not normally done in the private sector. I asked the question on here but don't recall the answer. Anyway in my case, working for a private company, and because it was early retirement at my request, there was no pay in lieu as I hadn't worked for almost a year. Its not as if you/me were made redundant
It would be nice if you got a pay out but.......................;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Further help required please, I finally got my medical retirement through, got my pension sorted and a small lump sum will be in my bank within 10 days (only took just over 12 months). My next question is,, Am i entitled to any 'wage' or PILON.
No as you have been, medically, retired rather than being made redundant.0 -
Also be aware that if you ever are able to work again, and I don't want to pry, they will highly likely be able to reduce your pension entitlement asuming you have some sort of enhanced agreement.;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Hi Kazz3105,
This might be useful to YOU and to future readers of this thread. It's quoted directly from HM Revenue & Customs Registered Pension Schemes Manual (Crown Copyright): (Link here)
Quote:
Ill Health
A member may take benefits at any age where the scheme administrator accepts qualified medical advice to the effect that the member satisfies the ill-health condition, and so is and will continue to be, medically incapable (either physically or mentally) as a result of- injury,
- sickness,
- disease, or
- disability
Whilst the legislation refers to being incapable of carrying on the member’s current occupation, scheme rules may of course be much stricter in determining the ill-health criteria. For example, they may state that the member must be incapable of carrying out any occupation, rather than the current occupation that they are in.
Unlike other kinds of pensions that have to be paid for life and have controls on whether they reduce, an ill health scheme pension may be reduced or stopped at any time. After such a change it may later recommence or increase back to the earlier rate or to some intermediate amount. Typically schemes will have rules to take advantage of such a facility in order to cover situations where a member subsequently recovers or partially recovers from ill-health, and they want to provide a level of pension appropriate to the member’s capacity to carry out their occupation. For further information see RPSM09101520.
End Quote
I hope this helps, particularly the last paragraph.

Hi Kazz,
On the PILON you won't be entitled to this as said already by Andy.
Have you been told if you will have to go for a medical once a year?
A friend got ill health retirement from a broken leg and she has to go once a year to see the Capita Doc's, if they deem her fit (highly unlikely in her situation as her legs a mess) they will reduce / stop her pension. She also told me the CS could re-employer her but I don't know how true that is.
I also know another guy who went out on ill health retirement with a heart complaint and he was the same until he reached 60 and then the medicals stopped.
On another note - when you get your paperwork through with your pensionable pay etc listed on it, double check it. When I got mine through it was incorrect and it took me 4 months to get it sorted out. They will use your highest year in the last 3 years.
You will need your payslips for those particular 12 months to double check - if you don't have them ring them up and get copies. Some things on your payslip can't be counted in your pensionable pay (even though they will be included in the pensionable pay listed on your payslip) such as bonuses and back pay, so subtract them from the pensionable pay given on your payslip. If you do that for all 12 add them together and hopefully it will match what they have said it should be. If not then query it with PPPA.
My shift allowance hadn't been counted (apparently the system couldn't figure it out!!!) which meant I was 12.5% short!!! I got all I was owed plus interest and a bonus apology payment of £50, so worth checking.
If you need any help with it just PM me. Have sorted out a few up to now including my own.
Not sure on the paperwork. I know I had to re-sign the Official Secrets Act thing, but I think that was it, mine was redundancy although I would think the paperwork would be much the same.
Enjoy your freedom (I am)

I have been dismissed following ill health resulting from bullying in the Civil Service. I got the 6 month's full pay then 6 month's half pay then nothing at all. The Shared services people said I would get an SSP form from HR but I never did. I applied some 4 month's later and was given ESA then sent for a medical given nil points and told I had to sign on. I did not sign on as I am not fit for work.
What I would like to know is though my employer states that I was not going to be medically retired as they just wanted rid of me to avoid the bullying claims isn't it the pension people who ultimately decide whether there is a case for medical retirement?
I went to Occupational Health twice but the recommendations made were not carried out as one of them was a management assessment and that would have exposed the bullying so at the minute I am penniless and awaiting a Tribunal where my bully will have legal support paid for by the taxpayer and I will be on my own. Unions do not take up bullying cases so 33 years' subs were a waste of time too. If it was not for my husband I would have starved to death so this myth about the Civil Service looking after you is just that.
Can I ask the pensions people to consider retiring me through ill - health or does it have to come from management?0
