Norton Upgrade or an alternative?

My Norton subscription has expired and I've been told time and time again that it's rubbish.

So what's best to replace it?

I'm running XP, on a wireless home network.

I used to use AVG and Ad-Aware but both have gone down the fee charging route recently.

For me personally NOD32. Others may swear by diferent brands but Eset's is not a resource hog and scanes extremely fast (very reputable). A free alternative is AVG, theres many to choose from of course.

Try Avast, I'd recommend it to anyone. I ditched Norton and have never regretted that move. I use Avast as well as the free version of AVG.

The new version of AdAware doesn't actually do anything unless you subscribe, bit of a rip-off. The old version is unsupported now and doesn't update.

What do you mean doesn't do anything? Mine scans perfectly well and is the latest version.

I couldn't get it to scan, update or even run properly without demanding an upgrade.

You mustn't have installed the free version. Believe me I've got Adaware 2007 version 7.0.2.6 installed. It doesn't have real time protection (but I don't think the free version ever did) but it certainly scans without problem or any kind of pestering.

I presume you downloaded the above. I can't remember if it offers you the choice at installation to install the free or plus or pro version, but check carefully if it does when you install.
