    If anyone knows...
I paid emergency tax for 14 weeks, do I have to contact the tax office or will it be given back to me automatically in April? cheers.

Do you mean BR? If so then if your tax code has already changed to a cummulative basis (M/W1) then you will have received the rebate.

If you are still on a M/W1 basis and have paid too much tax you wont be refunded automatically but have to contact HMRC.

Hi my tax code starts BR and it's because I have two jobs and taxed (a lot) on my second icome. I thought it was basic rate ie emergency tax but went in to our local tax office and assured it wasn't. I was hoping for a rebate!!

BR does stand for Basic Rate but this is NOT emergency tax. It means that you are being taxed at 22% on all earnings. This is more than likely because you are using all your tax allwences in your first job.

Wont make a jot of difference rayday ~ there is no such thing as a married mans allowence anymore.

Well thats what I thought and never told tax office but looking on there site they say a basic one starts with a 5 and married with a 6 well surely that gives you a £1000 less a year to be taxed on.

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/BeginnersGuideToTax/DG_4015583

There it talks about married couples allowance and includes civil parnterships so has to be recent?

Or am I totally missing the point?

  • Last year I noticed an anomaly on my P60, so I put in a claim for a repayment, and I received a cheque That inspired me to make claims for the proceeding 5 years and to my horror I'd overpaid in all of them, I received refunds totalling £2500.00, not bad for ten minutes work.
  • Like someone has said it takes a long time to claim over paid tax back. I'm still waiting!

its nice to know that others have had rebates an that other people may check their codes.

Once again sorry for any onfusion that i caused with my original post!

  • My son was on this when he started his first job after finishing college. He paid basic rate tax from the first pay packet. When the job finished after 3 months and he claimed JSA he was told to ring the tax office. They told him it would get sorted in April. He has earned only about £4000 from his job and then JSA since November, so in theory should get back the tax he has paid, as he has not earned enough to pay Income Tax. Is that right? Should he keep chasing them, or will he get it automatically. Sorry to hijack, but really useful point made.
