Hi Guys and Girls,
Just a reminder more than anything to check your tax code.
I found out that I have been paying tax in my new job since August so can expect a tax rebate. I called the IR today to give them a kick up the bottom and they told me that the rebate will go back to April.
(sorry to gloat)
If your tax code is a few numbers followed by BR, W1, W2 then you are on emergency tax. Dont quote me on this as im no expert
Its just a shame i dont know how much it will be but even if its £50 its better than a kick in the teeth.

A few numbers will never be followed by BR. Nor does the above automatically indicate you are on emergancy tax.
HOWEVER ~ you are correct in suggesting that we should check our tax codes. Mr HMRC will never be as quick to let you know that he owes you money than he is to demand you owe him

Sorry for the inaccurate advice... if i knew anything about tax i would have claimed it bak a LONG time ago.
I now advise doing an internet search than relying on anything I say about tax!
I hope that your the person who's due a rebate! One day, I AM going to be out of debt. I'm just not sure when.MSE to do's: new mobile contract, get contents insurance, get a better paid job!Ebay March challange - £150 -

Hi my tax code starts BR and it's because I have two jobs and taxed (a lot) on my second icome. I thought it was basic rate ie emergency tax but went in to our local tax office and assured it wasn't. I was hoping for a rebate!!Proud to be dealing with my debts through cccs

If anyone knows...
I paid emergency tax for 14 weeks, do I have to contact the tax office or will it be given back to me automatically in April? cheers.odi et amo0 -
Guy's,
It might also be worth noting that if you do not hand your employers a P45 when you first join them but complete a P46 instead you may still end up paying more tax than normal.
This happened to me recently and it was not until HMRC wrote to me to advise that my tax band had changed did I realise I was paying too much income tax.
As a result of that conversation and one I had with my payroll Dept, I received a tax rebate of £1200 in Jan's pay packet.
Lizalu - It might be worth contacting your local tax office and chasing them. i do not think tax rebates automatically come out in April (but I could be wrong).
Great thread. We should all check with the tax man to be on the safe side. A 5 minute phone call me prove beneficial to someone out there.
Good Luck

Grr big bone of contention in this house tax codes just wrote a letter of complaint to our tax office hubbys tax code has dropped to 22L for next tax year they reckon there was an underpay in tax.
Anyway we can see one month when the tax was lower than it should be but no way does that add up to that amount - I wish! But what we did notice was that hubbys tax code was for single person and I don't earn enough to pay tax on my job so that went in the letter - sit and wait now!0 -
I had this happen to me for a good few months and one thing is dont expect it to just turn up,. i had to chase it up for months and over the phone was pointless, best to get all your payslips etc and go see them in person0

We have tried countless phone calls hence the letter, we are slightly in the sticks in comparison to where the tax office is. But I shall take on board what you have said and re-send letter with copies of marriage cert, pay slips etc in a month if I have not heard.
They just don't appreciate that that low tax coding seriously will effect us next year and they don't care. They admit they made a mistake in saying we had a pension (the idiot at tax office couldn't find the company car code so put it through as a pension) and yet they have left that pension on there and then added the company car.
There main response is wait till APril but we can't afford many months of paying tax at that level while they assess.0 -
