How to fit outdoor light

Hi,

My Gran has asked me if I could fit her a new outdoor light to the corner of her house, at the moment she has an old one which is fitted on a corner bracket. If possible she would like it so when you walk up the drive the PIR picks you up and comes on, and she would also like it to work (or have a second light) at the back door so when she takes the rubbish out a light comes on too. Basically the PIR is not going to pick both areas up so I was thinking of putting a bulkhead perhaps down the drive with a PIR on and a 150w floodlight at the rear so that will keep her happy. At the minute there is cable going to the original light which I can use for the bulkhead on the drive, but how do I get power to the floodlight approx 3 metres around the corner, can I run a wire from the bulkhead to the floodlight???

Sorry if its a bit long just not sure if it will work.

Regards

Dave

  • yup, just run the 3meter cable
  • So basically, run both wires into the bulkhead then the new wire from the bulkhead to where i want it then fit new one, a few cable clips and bobs your uncle or in my case Elsie is my gran! LOL

    Thanks
  • This work would need to be performed by a suitably qualified electrician.

    It would?

Legally it 'should' be done by a qualified person as it is in a special location. Outside and bathrooms etc are considered to be special locations.

Very soon we will need a " qualified " person out to change a ruddy light bulb.

    Nanny State UK.

I dont think thats true if the light is fixed to the wall of the house.
  • Hmmm seems we have a bit of debate, i have just spoke to a friend who is a qualified leccy and he told me i could do it. He said it would take him a max of 30 mins to do and said it probably wouldnt take me any longer. Not once did he say i was not allowed to know it and he is a very knowledgeable person.

Just fit it, don't worry about the Nanny State rules, even if they do apply.
