Small Biz Web Design

Can anyone recommend a web designer for a small 'people skills' training biz, and what should one pay for about 6-10 pages.

I have looked at many but find them poor quality or extremely expensive.

Sincerely

price depends on if it is a basic text only site or you want interactive pages

also depends on if you want them to arrange the domain name and web space..

give us a few basic requirements ... :)

Have you talked to your local business support places like, chamber of commerce, business link etc. They give large grants toward things such as this and you will get a better quality result. Have a look at https://www.businesslink.gov.uk
Like my avatar, took the photo myself with the free digital camera I bought from boots with all my free points! I love moneysaving.

I design and develop websites for a living. It really depends what you are after as to what you will pay. You need someone who can understand your objectives and your users to produce a quality site. You do get what you pay for in this business and there are many mediocre efforts out there as well as good ones. I wont post my website as I don't think it is allowed but you can view it through my profile if you would like to.

Can you state exactly what the purpose of the website is?

    That's the first step.
  • You should look for advice through your local enterprise company or chamber of commerce as the going rate will really depend on the market/competition in your local area (I think its essential that you are able to meet the web designer face to face). If you write all your own content, get a design student who wants to add to their portfolio to 'brand' you and have a very definite idea of your 'sitemap' before you talk to a designer, it could be done very reasonably. As an example, when my site, Dietarycard, launched in 1999 with under 10 pages and an online ordering function, we were charged £500 for design, domain purchase and 2 years hosting (another reason you should contact your local enterprise company - they met some of our IT set-up costs - they also run sessions on exactly these topics). Towards the end of last year, before my brother learnt HTML and started doing all our editing for us, the same webdesigner was adding pages/editing existing pages for about £15 per hour (and he was fast so charging very little) and other local designers were only asking £10. This is simply down to the expansion in the local area of web design businesses. make sure to get a contract in writing that explicitly states that you own the material, design, domain and have access codes for editing - as this means you can have your site edited in future by the most competitive/efficient/inventive web designer in town and your original web designer doesn't hold all your cards.

As careerwumman says it is vital that you have control of your site rather than your original web designer. I was involved in a hevay dispute with another web designer recently who had registered the domain to herself and not to the company who paid for it. She wanted £300 for releasing it and it got a little ugly. It was never hers to barter with in the first place so please be very careful and do not get caught like this. We sorted it out eventually and did not pay her but it was not pretty and cost more in time and effort than it ever should have done.

You need to have any domains registered to a contact in your own company and also make sure you are the admin contact for those domains. Then you will need to FTP details of how to access your website at you chosen host. If the details do get change, you as admin contact can access them again by contacting the host. So make sure you know who that is and how to contact them.

I use 1&1 internet, they do hosting and have an online website creator so you can create a professional looking website without having much experience! Not expensive either...

I just pop in now and then.... :)

It really depends on what kind of service you want and who you want to do it - do you want some big company or a nice friendly freelancer..
