Can I leave wahing in machine overnight?

We finally have our washing machine, and I've done a wash with towels today. However it has been raining like mad this afternoon and has only just stopped! Can I leave the towels in the machine and put them out tomorrow, or will they go funny. I've only ever put things straight out from the machine to the line at home so…

I have a machine that is just a few months old. With my old one I used to put a wash on last thing at night and put it to dry in the morning - but this one, the clothes smell fousty after a few hours so I don't leave it overnight any more. The machine has been like this from day one
