If npower closed your account on estimated readings were these estimates nothing like what the actual readings would have been on the 31st December? If the readings were heavily over estimated the surely npower are in the wrong and must produce another final bill based on your readings?

What we need to know is where the £900 comes from. Is it an accumulation based on the fact they you have been underbilled hence not payed enough or is it the final bill alone that has caused it?

Does the reading look similiar to the meter's current reading? If so, you have been underestimated in your billing periods which have caused this.

They will be fine with setting up a payment arrangement with you.

In regards to getting your money from Tesco, how? They would have to give the money back if it was an overcharging error, thats not Tesco's problem.

Did you submit a reading to Tesco? Is it correct? Are there any missing digits etc?

If you didn't give a handover reading then the estimate is provided by Tesco's appointed Data Collector (meter readers), not Npower or their agents. If that estimate it wrong, contact Tesco and dispute it. They will then request the reading to be changed but it can take up to 8 weeks to get it sorted at which point Npower would also get a copy and change your bill.

Not clear enough without a bit more info really.
