Bush 28" Widescreen for £145, as long as you don't mind factory reconditioned stock. Don't know how much the postage is though.

Just a note of warning about TVs. Most of the TV tubes of the generic brands are made by the same company (in China, I believe). They, unfortunately, have a tendency to catch fire! If you have these, please make sure you switch the TV off completely before you go to bed, leave the house etc. Do not leave the TV on standby. Also, you'll be saving some money since TVs on standby use approx. 80% of its max power.

I tend to pay the extra and go for the big brands i.e. Sony, Phillips etc. since they manufacture their own tubes. The trick is then to get good deals.

...and how many people do you know or have heard of that have had their cheapo TV's go up in flames in this day and age? I should think you would've heard of it some where or other like in the papers, on the news or Watchdog.

My mother in law got her cheap as chips Bush 21" TV about 12 years ago, it's out-lasted our old Sony and is still going strong.

Any electrical product can potentially flare up, but providing you have it correctly fused, wired and a decent fuse box installed - then you should be OK.

I would think that ALL Televisions have to pass a Euro standard before being sold in the UK, I can't imagine them catching fire, there would be a re-call and all sorts of future loss of sale... It's chip pans that catch fire after you come home S**T faced and fancy a few french fires only to fall asleep in front of the telly

Bagger is right about leaving your goods on standby, but wrong I feel on the bigger brands. The widescreen TV Sainsbury's are / were selling is a rebadged Hitachi. Most of the brand names do not manufacture anything anymore. What generally happens is that the brand name sources component parts from whereever and then assembles it in a brand name package. Why do you think DVD players are so cheap and widescreen TV prices have fallen?

Thats perfectly true most large companies out source there supplies most electrical goods are manufactured in China.

However, another reason why electrical items have been going down in price over recent years is that supermarkets have come into the scene and hence the likes of Comet , Currys etc have had to reduce there prices to compete.

This was true years ago but most items now only use 3-5 watts in standby mode(virtually nothing).Power consumption during operation and standby will be in manual for comparison.

I've never heard of TV's using 80% of their power in stand-by ever. The most i've ever heard is 30%.

I read an article on ethical living in the Guardian ,where it stated that tv tubes use up to 80% of there power consumption in standby mode but modern tft monitors only use 10% when in standby.
I recently saw a documentry on tv on the booming Chinese economony where it shows you footage of a small back street sweatshop where it stated women worked a 60 hour week for a few pounds you could clearly see the brand name SONY on the electronic equipment they were handling.Footage like this still has to be smuggled out of the country.Draw your own conclusions!
  • This is nonsense, the tube is not powered when the set is in standby mode - none of the HT circuit is powered in standby and thats where all the power goes.
