Getting an xbox live connection with talktalk

I'm writing this on behalf of a friend, who is having loads of trouble with talktalk and xbox live.
Since getting his xbox 360 at christmas he has only managed to get 'strict' nat settings on xbox live, (basically this means a reduced bandwidth) and it limits what he can do online, in certain games, conversations etc.
This is quite frustrating as it means quite often we cannot play online games at the same time.

however he has followed it to the word, twice and it has made no difference.
Does anyone have any ideas on this please.

Hi, Stephen thanks,
the modem he is using is the SmartAX MT882,
he is connecting directly from xbox 360 to modem, not using a hub/router of any sort.
He only got the internet installed in November, so I would imagine the modem is new!!

Sorry for the delay in replying, Have you allowed access to the correct ports, Xboxlive requires 2 ports to be open on your router. If you access the config pages on the MT883 and go to Advanced then IP filter you should be able to add these ports to the router.
