Credit Card Virgin!!

Hi,
We have never had a credit card out of choice but now we are buying our first house and we need things like carpets, oven etc. I am tempted to get a credit card to buy these.

If I got a credit card to make the purchase could I then get another card that had a 0% balance transfer and move the credit to that one?

What are the chances of me being able to get 2 credit cards within a short space of time, all I am hearing at the moment is how hard it is to get credit at the moment.

Would this be a good way of a kind of 0% loan? Sorry these are probably really obvious questions, just thought I would pick some knowledgable brains!!

Also any suitable card deals anyone knows about would be great.
Thanks x

Have you considered a card which gives you 0% on purchases instead?

Examples of such cards include HSBC and Halifax

At the end of the 0% on purchases period, if you still have a balance outstanding, you could then consider balance transferring it to another card.

  • First of all I'd say be very sure you can afford to pay it back before you go this route - personally I only stooze with credit card money...I'd worry about having too much money on credit cards that I can't pay back. And if you do decide to do this you need to be very disciplined about setting aside the money each month so that you can pay it off at the end of the 0% period.

You could either go the 0% on purchases route that is suggested above by sunil . I did this with an M&S card - it's worth considering this if some of your purchases are likely to be in M&S. Or you could spend on eg an amex 5% cashback card and then transfer the balance. Don't forget though that most balance transfers are charged at around 3% so you'll only actually make 2% on it. Personally I'd say if it's your first time I'd go the 0% on purchases route - you only need one card and it's a simpler system to operate.

As for whether you get the cards, no one knows really how this works. It's well worth checking your experian report (go through quidco for £ back and a free trial :)). If you've recently moved you also need to ensure you're on the electoral register - my experience is that if you aren't you may as well not bother applying :(

    Good luck in any case.
