I admire the efforts of Mr Oliver and Mr Whittingstall for their highlite of battery hen conditions, however in my opinion they fail to grasp one fundamental reason behind mass production.
Can you, using free range hens sustain the eating requirements of a nations desire for chicken and at what cost ?
Firstly i don't think you can and secondly they are just too expensive for the masses.
People were seen on their television programmes admit to buying non free range chickens because they were on a limited budget, so effectivley the speeding up process of supermarkets favouring the stocking of free range chickens could put the weekly sunday roast out of the reaches of these people.
I have one soloution and will i am sure not be welcomed by a percentage of the population, we need to encourage Mr Oliver & Co to harrass and further promote free range to the point where the supermarkets will have a surplus of battery hens. Never mind 2 for £5.00 they will be giving them away. So are Mr Oliver and Co helping or hindering the humle chicken ?
I only hope they raise the plight of other fowl and game, yes game, what about the poor rabbit, and what about the fish ? these are intensley farmed but i don't hear any drums banging on their behalf. Perhaps they are not as user friendly to promote ?

This was a post i was discussing which can be commented on through my profile.

we bought a rspca standard freedom chicken (sainsburys)for only 3.49 which to me isnt expensive for a whole chicken. i know its not free range but i thought the conditions it states they are bred in sounded okay.

If toilet paper was too expensive, would you wipe your backside on straw?

Why do people think it is acceptable to eat crappy, mass-produced, water and chemical filled, meat? why don't you just save the extra 2 quid you pay for this poor excuse for food and eat the plastic container they put it in?

A large organic freerange chicken from the farm shop near me = £4.09 does two meals plus soup/stock.

Sorry let me respond to your points one by one

No, but there are still the odd people who use newspaper for this reason. Since you can buy a pack of 4 value toilet rolls for 40p or something I don't think this issue is really the same.

They don't think it is acceptable, it IS acceptable to them. For some people, it ISN'T acceptable. This is a matter of opinion here, not a fact. If it was a fact that it wasn't acceptable to eat this meat it wouldn't be on sale.

Because the plastic container is inedible. Don't sully your argument by getting ridiculous - you've got enough reasonable points in the arsenal surely?

Ooh, lucky you! What about people who don't live near a farm shop?
