Can someone please explain to me how this saves electricity?
I've looked on the Kenwood site and all it says is "an energy saving of up to 35%" and "when used to manufacturers guidelines" ........which could mean anything.

OK, I understand the basics, you have a std amount of energy needed to boil some water, as far as I know a curled element will be slightly more efficient than a flat element, as its immersed in the water and I suppose there might be other teeny tiny things that might make a difference in kettles, but what can make a 35% difference?

i see what your saying curled element would be slightly more efficent than a flat element, (due to more surface area) BUT if the element is flat , you can put a small amount of water in it, wheras in a curled element it would have to be covered with more water.

so perhaps thats what they mean by 35% difference?

True, but most kettles I should think have flat elements now.
    Thats not the answer.

This kettle is £34.99, you can buy a kettle for £4.99 - or less.

The £30 you have saved will pay for about 100 hrs of extra continuous boiling of your cheap kettle. IF your posh kettle actually uses 35% less electricity than the cheapo one you still get an extra 65 hrs of boiling.

That's an awful lot of pots/cups of tea !

I didn't say I was going to buy it, but wanted to know how it was supposed to save energy.
However, if as nick says, you have to boil more water most times to cover the element in a cheaper kettle, then that would cost slightly more to run.

How long does a cheap kettle take to boil? I've only had fast boil kettles for years now.
We boil our kettle at least 12 times a day, thats a complicated maths puzzle :D plus the convenience of a fast boil kettle, well worth a few quid extra to buy it in the first place for us.

What is a cheap kettle ? What is a fast boil kettle ?

A cheap 3kW kettle will boil twice as fast as a 1.5kW so-called "fast boil" kettle. If you want a kettle to boil faster get a higher rated one.

The whole thing is little more than a play on words and a bit of a con.

The whole advert is of course a con!

There is a very slight efficiency saving by having, say a 3kW kettle over a 1kW kettle as there will be more heat loss with the slower kettle.

I think if you put x amount of water into a kettle with y power it takes z to make it boil. Really i doubt there is any difference. The saving is made on the amount of water you put into it.
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

I have enlarged and made bold the answer from kenwood ;)

Kenwood is launching a new Energy Sense kettle (JK450) for consumers who want to enjoy a cuppa with a clear conscience. The 1.7 litre clear jug kettle has a unique element which offers an energy saving of up to 35%
    [*]
but still has wattage of 3kW allowing it to boil water rapidly, providing consumers with the best of both worlds.

With a clear, light weight body and wide angled spout, for easy filling and pouring, the Energy Sense makes environmental sense in the kitchen! It features improved element technology combined with clear visibility which allows you to boil the water you need and no more. The angled graduations used when you tilt the kettle to fill through the spout, allow you to accurately measure the exact waterquantity every time, which prevents you boiling too much or too little.

There is a secure hinged lid and illuminated power switch for safety and clarity and a removable fine mesh filter that prevents limescale entering drinks.

Penny Jones, Trade Marketing Manager for Kenwood and , comments: “Our new Energy Sense kettle has been launched to meet a genuine demand from consumers who are becoming increasingly conscious of the environment and are looking for ways to conserve energy in their everyday lives, without compromising on quality. The one cup measurement allows you to fill a little but save a lot and is a stylish but practical addition to any modern kitchen.”

This kettle comes packaged in recycled cardboard and a reusable cotton bag which adds to the overall ‘good feeling’ consumers get from the product and ensures it is authentically eco friendly.

It would be interesting to see the operating instructions to see how Kenwood want you to save energy. I missed the bit that Fedz outlined, it seems like the answer is that you can easily just put one cup of water, thats exactly the same as the other "green" kettle if I remember correctly.

How can a 3kw element be made more efficient, is it actually possible?

Gosh ! I didn't realise that it was THAT sophisticated. Where can I buy one - or even two.
