you say alpha is more risky but as some data posted above mentions the volatility of the two is very similar

Yes that is true........and stats never lie ;) .

My point about the 'risk' is purely due to the low number of holdings that the Alpha fund is designed to hold, rather than the broader Global Equity fund. In theory that should increase the 'risk'

My other observation is that the Global Alpha fund appears to be a 'best ideas' fund, and thus the performance ought to be better than the Global Equity fund, especially in the positive market conditions of the previous few years, and the fact that is hasn't outperformed would worry me.

Back to the OP's inital questions and IMO investing in just one fund, or even 2 funds in just one sector is a risky strategy.

For a fund that has / had nearly a third of its investments in UK and Europe, I'm not sure thats such a good idea, but I'm sure in your panacea fund UK and Europe will drop to 0% and be moved in to emerging markets or similar?

The ironic thing Wombie is that based on your stated investment strategy you dont need to do this sort of research as the FM deals with it and you'll come back in 10 years to see whats there - Just think what you could achieve by doing exactly the same sort of research and identifying invesment opportunities. :T

Isn't it amazing how just about every thread on the subject of Funds or Investing ends up being all about Womble.......and nothing about the original question !!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the forum tends to be about Geffen worship rather than Womble worship.

Are there any markets in thw world not going down at present ? Its hardly surprising that Neptune Global Equity fund is going down - which is classed as a growth fund. As for Neptune Global Alpha being classed as an Active Managed Fund I dont invest in it and I have previously explained why I dont endorse this fund.

I do notice that JM Finn Global Ops is looking quite resiliant at present, maybe I ought to switch to it :D
