Hookey Wi-Fi - Luton Airport

  • I know, I've even quoted similar myself, about that bloke who sat on a wall outside a house and tapped into the property owners wi-fi, I just find it funny that this site attracts more finger waggers than average, the internet is so full of forums where people speak their minds and ideas, coming here can be a shock when "school teachers" pounce, it's part of the attraction.

But then this site does have strict rules in the T&C regarding what can and can't be discussed which everyone agrees to when they join.

Let's be honest the web isn't short of information and discussion on most of the dodgy subjects which are banned here.

That's not nthe most important thing and not the first point made on the thread. The first and most important point was that it could be a honeypot. So completely ignoring the legalities of accessing wifi without permission, it's just not a practical idea to do it. This isn't about finger wagging it's about the OP's and anyone else's own safety and preventing them from having their bank accounts cleared out etc.

I like people like sleep2much. They're the ones who think they're being clever downloading software off bittorrent and using open wifi without realising that it's a virtual guarantee they've been p0wned whether by getting user/passes from the wifi or rootkitting their computers. I love rootkits. It's like the ultimate vengeance on people like sleep2much because it's totally invisible to antispyware/virus software so they sit there in their ignorance thinking their PC is OK whilst all the time their broadband which they're complaining is slow is only slow because they're a part of a botnet or similar. They've provided me with a nice income over the years.

Yep, the upside of MSE is that the advice you can get here is very focussed and relevant often times. Other side of the coin is that if your discussion shows you are even thinking of transgressing laws that may or may not be actually enforceable in practice, up pop one or two objections.

Reminds me of when I once tried to get the Nissan dealer to fix my vibrating wheels (after paying for them to be balanced twice with no improvement): Could only demo this issue when cruising with a nice steady 80 mph showing on the speedo - the dealer therefore refused to help as having their techy see the problem would be illegal (unless we went to France first). Never had a service done at a Nissan dealership since.

Actually (as I keep saying) the biggest problem brought up on this thread has nothing to do with the legalities. It's the honeypot issue which is far more relevant and important. Whether or not you may possibly be prosecuted for using wifi in a publicly accessible place with other genuine hotspots (which is highly unlikely you would be) pales into insignificance to the chance that if it's a honeypot you'll lose control of all your email accounts and possibly lose the money from your bank accounts. I'd say that was extremely relevant to the OP.

Doesn't even have to be a honeypot, anyone in the vicinity with a laptop could be watching everything you do.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

True, I'd only ever use an unsecured wireless network for general internet browsing with no transmitting of personal details. But because I can't be sure exactly what's being transmitted I don't think I'd use one anyway unless I was using it from a "clean" browser, eg on a device I never use for personal info online.

You're a braver bloke than me. You should try connecting to a Windows computer over a network from a Linux one. Use nmap to scan for what version of Windows and what services are running, use LinNeighborhood for a quick and easy way to browse hidden Windows shares and from that, the entire hard drive. A quick pop over to the browser history and thanks to the fact sites like Hotmail use session ID URLs and not https once you've authenticated, you've full access.
