Post office car insurance - £50 cashback for new customers only?

Hi everyone,

I've currently got my car insured with the Post Office. They're offering £50 cashback for new customers. Is there any way I can get this? Also, the comparison sites have provided quotes for the Post Office saying 'price includes £50 cashback'. Does that mean they've taken the £50 off the quote?

My next cheapest quote is with Endsleigh. I know they're keen on offering insurance to 'professionals'. I'm a Library Assistant and have been putting my occupation in as Librarian, as it seems the closest match (even though I earn less than librarians!). Is it ok to do that? Do you think Endsleigh would be more expensive if they knew I was a Library Assistant? I do exactly the same job as a Librarian, but I dont have the qualification!

  • Bump. I'm in the same position, except I haven't bought the car yet. I'm a library assistant and I'd like to get insurance as a librarian, cause that's one of the lowest risk job titles. Library assistant never appears in the list of available job titles, so if I can't say librarian I'd have to go for customer service assistant :-P
  • Purplestar, did you ever find out if that was legit or not?
    cheers Chris

  • Ultimately every insurer does their own thing but most insurers I have worked with have mapped occupations to a group of classifications (eg unskilled manual, skilled manual, clerical, professional) and the rating is done based on the group rather than individually for every occupation appearing in the ABI list. Almost all insurers use the ABI list as it makes working with brokers and aggregators simpler (hence why if you dont find your job on one you will find it on hardly any).

I personally wouldnt know the difference between a librarian and library assistant and would suggest the majority are in the same boat. If you are concerned, put it through as librarian but before you actually buy then call the insurer/ broker in question and validate they are happy with your guestimate.
