Late payment charges

I think I have paid my Capitol One card too late. Used the online bill payment system from my bank on Friday afternoon but the due date is 6th Feb. The min payment is only for £16 but there is a £12 late payment charge.

Is there any way to avoid this charge, get let off it or to get money in there more rapidly? I have the money but it takes so damn long for it to clear!

Thanks,

Jon

  • Unless they refund from the goodness of their hearts then the charge will stand - the facts are that you were late in paying.
However you can make sure this never happens again by setting up a direct debit for the minimum payment. They will take this from a current account of your choice on the due date.

You could try claiming it back!
  • Phone them up and tell them the situation and plead to their better nature. However, if you've made late payments before, they will take this into account. On the other hand, if you've never had any late payments, they just might waver it for you.

Ask them, you've nothing else to lose by it have you?

This has worked for me in the past when it was a one off genuine error...as moonshadow says what do you have to lose?
  • Hello

Just out of interest Jon, will you let us know how you got on please?

I'm sure this will be of interest to many out there faced with the same dilemma and would help no end to know that if you go about things in a decent manner, things can be overcome.

It may encourage some to not just sit back and think oh well nothing can be done so therefore I have to accept it (that's what the banks etc hope for). The money is better in your/our pockets than theirs.

These charges are so ridiculous and once you get started with them, they can put you really far behind with other things financially which a lot of people, I myself for one simply cannot afford.

I would like to add at this point though that although some banks/building societies are lenient with first-time mishaps, they wouldn't take too kindly to anyone making a habit of it, eg, more than once or twice if you're lucky.

The top and bottom of it really is that these charges shouldn't be allowed, I know they're making a stand against people who regularly make late payments or miss them but it's not fair when they have just as many good clients.

Right, I'm off my soapbox for now, hope I have been of use.
    Good luck.
    Moonshadow.
