in Techie Stuff
Sorry to disappoint if title confused things!
Basically haven't go a clue about technical stuff. Recently bought a new laptop, now have a flash up from Norton Protection Centre, saying system at risk, etc, and a little red mark for virus protection, protection updates, inbound firewall, spyware definitions.
Should I be buying Symantec Norton Internet Security 2008, for Vista looks like its about £35.00 for a year?
Is there something else a whole lot better and cheaper? Problem is for me there is too much information and too many options, and I JUST DON'T GET IT - HELP ME I'M STOOPID!
Thanks.

NOOOOOOOoooooo.........
Norton is the spawn of satan. It is a resource hog that brings computers to their knees. It's that pervasive, that they had to write a specific removal tool as Add/REmove programmes doesn't get rid of it completely.
Pop off to the Symantec website and get the removal tool to purge your system of it then pop over to www.eset.com and get Eset Smart Suite. There's a 30 day trial if you want to try before you buy.
You can't be that clueless as you've questioned using Norton which is further than many get.0 -
thanks, well I am a little clueless. I only really questioned it, because I checked to see how much it was via Kelkoo. Amazon sell it, then I had a look at the reviews - 7 people didn't rate it much!!
Well, that sounds interesting I'll have a look and see what it's all about. Thanks.0 -
Or if you want free protection download one of the followng AV programs
AVG
Avast
Antivir
Then download Zone Alarm firewall. There are other free firewalls but I can't remember if they're Vista compatible yet.
Personally I use Antivir and ZA. In addition you need to consider anti-spyware. You already have Windiows Defender as it comes with Vista, for additonal ad-hoc scans I'd recommend any or all of Spybot Search and Destroy, Superantispyware and Ad-Aware.
There is a sticky in this forum with lots of info on security. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends

Hi, just a quick question, is it this one you mean? (ESET Smart Security for Win /XP/2000/Vista), and do I run it or save it for the 30 day trial? Thanks for your help.0 -

I'd use the 30 day trial. See how you like it. I'm pretty sure if you use up the trial you get a discount offer akin to as if you're upgrading rather than paying the full license price."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
