So my parents would be better off if they divorced? lol, that's rather perverse.
I'll need to get more info from my parents, don't know how my much my dad declares as his salary. What I do know is that I visited them recently and was rather astonished that their retirement plan was to "see how things go". They have no pension, have not taken into account future mobility, ageing and care issues... and me and my brother are hardly in a position to help financially or otherwise.0 -
Do you have to be resident in the UK to get pension credits? I know this is the case for most income related benefits and tax credits, but as pensions are payable abroad I thought I'd ask.
Thanks in advance.0 -
Why has my post in answer to astralbee been deleted in its entirety by moderators, without any just explanation or guidance as to what they saw as a problem with it? It seems that this forum has now become dedicated to concealing and parrying the truth with regard to state pensions. My post solely stated the truth of the current position of UK current state pensioners, in relation to Pension Credit, how it could be received whilst having holidays abroad for some of the time, and warning other current non-pensioners of what is going to happen to them by the time they retire, if the currently-intended NI taxation abuse is implemented.
The post was expressed in erudite, polite and inoffensive language, and at least two members had already thanked me for the information in it. At the very least the moderator concerned should post an explanation, and guidance for why it was deleted in its entirety, and what it is that evidently will not be tolerated by them?0 -
Why still no reply to my question about my post answering astralbee being deleted by the moderators? Are they too shamefaced to answer, and to give any guidance concerning what they tolerate and what they do not tolerate in this topic?
Pension Credit seems to be like Income Support for seniors? It is reminiscent of the Victorian Workhouse principals, but available in the 21st century, to degrade and disgrace retired recipients who have given their best to this country over the many years of their working lives, including serving their Queen or King and country, in the military.
This is the new form of pseudo "Socialism" which is Zanu Labour. Ensure that any in need are exposed with disgrace, so that they may be identified clearly and brought into ignominy?.0 -
i have just applied for pension credit and would like to point out the money has gone up to just over £124 for single person, dont know the rate for a couple, you have nothing to lose by applying.

Tagging onto the end of this old thread as I can't find a more relevant one using the search button .
Basically I am a 60 year old self-employed retailer running a fairly high turnover but struggling with low margins shop that is about to be even further challenged by a national competitor opening in a few weeks , right next door to us , in a store 50 times bigger than ours !
By rights we should be blown out of the water and wondered what my strategy should be with regard to Pension Credit (assuming I can't find a job at my age ) , should I feel it best to close down .
Luckily the lease on my store is virtually expired and we are on good terms with our landlord so I am not tied to a long lease but would as a courtesy feel I should give 3 months notice when the time is right , could be December , finishing end of March .
My financial year ends 31st Jan .
If I felt that my store was unviable and needed to close , when would be the best time ? Given that I would be paying rent till the end of next March .
Obviously I don't know how much I will come out with , in regard to capitol as I don't know by how much I will need to reduce the stock and then there are the delapidations of the premises /redundancies to sort out.... but together with savings am assuming I may have £40,000 in cash but have a small mortgage to pay for our current home .
I would qualify for Pension Credit because of my age (my wife will also be out of work aged 58 ).
Apart from a small private pension that I now take of £50 per week , we would have no other income .
If I wait till the end of March to close because of the lease and thus into my new financial year , will that make a difference with regard to the claim (as there may be some profits ) ? Or as soon as I am no longer self-employed do I become eligible as long as any surplus cash from the business is included in the declared savings ?
Checking very quickly on the Pensions Credit Calculator (thanks for the link ) we should be eligible for £160 pw.0 -
self employment is not a straight forward case, it has to go through a specalist and therefore treated totally different, your best option would be to apply and go through the process, they will get you to complete a B16 form which asks you about your self employment and assests etc,0

Yes, if youve been a spendthrift, have not made any preparation for your old age, or have not paid a penny in NI contibutions, apply for pension credit, paid for by people who have.0

Thanks I would go through the process but wondered on the timing of my closure .0 -

Charming . Thought this was a thread about claiming a benefit that may be due , irrespective of the circumstances !
Well have been in continuous employment / self employment for 45 years since leaving school and always paid my dues .
In hindsight I know I should have paid more into a private pension but always assumed that I would have a business to sell when retirement came but due to circumstances the recession has probably made it worthless .
I am hardly a big spender , can't remember the last time we even had time off or a holiday and have tried to save cash for our retirement .0
