NCD on only one policy?

Help. I am concerned about my existing situation after doing some insurance comparisons. I own 2 cars and have 2 separate policies. Both of them show my 9 years NCD. Is this OK? I ran some comparisons to get a better deal on insuring a BMW after a nasty shock from Churchill. The competition came up with some really good quotes but asked for confirmation the ncd was not on any other car. It is so my 9 years could not be applied. Even the comparison site indicates you may only have your ncd on one policy. How is this when you can build up on both vehicles? Surely many people own more than one car. What's the legal position? Do you HAVE to have a 'multi' car policy and thereby have both with the same insurer or is there a way around this?

Have you been claim free on both cars for 9 years? or for the last 9 years had 2 cars and be claim free?

Or was it that due to this lack of knowledge a year or 2 ago you started out with putting down accumulted NCD from car 1 onto Car 2.

I believe that Direct Line now mirror NCD onto 2 cars though, check their website for details.

It does mean that your NCD is at more risk but protecting it will mitigate this risk a bit.

If you have earned your 2 lots of NCD seperately then they are 2 seperate entities and you are entitled to use both seperately.
So if you have NCD A and NCD B then you can honestly answer NO to the question "is this NCD used on another vehicle" as it's referring to that individual NCD.

If you earned one lot of NCD and then applied it twice then I don't think you can do that.

If you have built up 9 years on both policies (ie driven both cars and insured them separately for 9 years each) then that is OK. However if you only recently bought one of the cars and your insurer gave you an introductory NCD then the same rules don't apply.

However there are many insurers who will still allow the discount so ask around. Best to phone them rather than use comparators websites

Thanks everyone. To answer BenL's questions I have had one claim free policy for at least 9 years - policy A. The second is the issue. We have had 3 cars for years but not too sure when the third car was put into my name - policy B . I think by now it has built up at least 5 years worth of ncd in its own right but quite possibly we did inadvertently lay down my existing ncd on that new policy out of ignorance. One major point here is that that policy has a recent claim which was settled by the current insurer (the ncd is also protected) and the full ncd is shown on the insurance renewal.
