Magnets for cat flaps.

We finally decided to get a cat flap and because of the huge population of cats in our area chose one that needs a magnet to get in. Think they are made by staywell. Anyway, it works fine, all 3 of my cats have mastered it and come and go as they please. However one of my cats is a panicker, so if he ever gets a teeny bit uncomfortable struggles and he is always losing collars. We have bought 2 replacement magnets from pets@home at about £7.50 for 2 but both these have got lost already along with 2 new collars  . Can anyone recommend somewhere to get these cheaper or a solution to this annoying situation!!

Also where could you buy just cheap little magnets from so maybe we could fashion something from it??

Thanks x

I'm not going to be much help cos my cat was the same. She kept the collar, just not the little magnet thing. In the end, we put sticky tape on the sensor thing, so she doesn't need the magnet anymore.

Doesn't solve your problem of keeping other cats out, but at least it helps your cat get in!

  • How about a pet porte? It's a catflap that reads each cats individual microchip so no need for a collar. It's expensive at £100 but moneysaving in the long run if you think how much you're likely to spend on magnets and collars.

  • I too bought one of these and my cat came back without the magnets twice - what a waste of money - so I bought a lockable catflap and now she can only go out and if she wants to come in - she has to meow at the door or wait for me to come back from work!! Now she knows when to go out and when she can get back in!!

  • Thanks everyone, I liked the idea of the microchip one - seemed expensive at the time but obviously now would eb far more cost effective!! Will defo bear in mind for the future. For now i have just bought 50 small magnetic rings and 100 keyring type loops for a grand total of £9.50 inc postage so gonna give these a whirl. If it does work then yay!! If not i'll sell them back on ebay. I'll keep you posted!
    Thanks again :)

We did this too!! However she's since learnt how to open the catflap from the outside, its hilarious to watch, she scoops her paw under the flap (the edging is slightly loose which I think helps her get her claws on), then uses the other paw to pull the catflap door upwards, then jumps in. Its great, none of the neighbourhood cats have figured it out yet ;)
Feeding my 'sheep' money box with any £2 coins I get - no idea how much is in there will empty it when full

One of our cats has learnt to do this as well, we were away on holiday and my parents were coming down 2x a day to feed them and he lost his collar and key during the first few days but was always in when my parents came in the morning to feed him although he wasn't later in the day.
We were quite bewildered until one day we heard a banging on cat flap and went to look and saw a little claw hooking the flap up the wrong way so he could get in, it takes several attempts hence the banging of the flap when it slips from his claw.
We love what we are doing and we love why we're doing it!!
