AC Adapter/Battery problem

I have an intermittent problem with my laptop battery or AC adapter. (For those reading the orange juice thread, this is a different lappie).

From time to time, the power is not connecting - so when I plug in the adapter, the battery doesn't charge or, if it's fully charge, the lappie is running on the battery and not "on AC power". At the same time, the display flickers as if there's interference of some description.

How can I diagnose whether this is a problem with the adapter, battery or some other component. Where, inside the case, the adapter does connect to? In particular, it's at the opposite end of the case to the battery

Any thoughts, please?

If you say what make and model it is, you may get more specific info on the likely cause, but as a generalisation, the socket where the AC adaptor plugs into the laptop is often the weakest link.

If it is still intermittent, you should be able to prove/disprove this by gently flexing the plug up and down while plugged in and powered on. If the charging light comes on and off, it's probably the socket.

I'm led to believe that it's a fairly simple job to replace/repair - though admit I've never actually done one...

the dc input supply socket on lappys is a well known problem.
the socket is soldered onto the mobo. replacements are available on ebay .com for a few dollars.

Thanks for that. I have tried to wiggle the adapter .... either I'm cack-handed (entirely possible ) or it makes no difference.

Interestingly, your view is the same as the following post ... that the point at which the adapter plugs in is Anne Robinson!

I'm happy to have a go at replacing it, so I might look into that.

That's the phrase! "DC input supply socket" thanks.

I'll have a go at replacing that. I might get a new adapter and battery as well. Would be useful to have both as a backup, even if the existing ones are "OK" at the moment.
