Laptop not working properly - help?

Ok... I'm not sure how much help I can get with this one, but it's worth a try...
I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, which is just over 2 years old. It runs on XP, and is used for just about everything - browsing, uni work, and as a media center, running all my music and movies on it. A couple of weeks ago I installed software for a Hauppage Digital TV thingy (USB stick and aerial set up), hoping that I would be able to use it for tv as well. However, ever since I did this, my laptop is taking ages to load up (around 10 minutes from switching on to finally finishing loading desktop/taskbar items), and is over heating very, very quickly (as in, the top of my laptop is hot to touch) - if I have it connected to the mains, it runs for around 45 minutes, maybe an hour, before shutting down due to over heating, and if I run on battery, it is dying within about 90 mins.
My laptop lives on desk when it is connected to mains power, and to be honest is very rarely run away from the desk, where it lives on one of those riser-thingys, that are supposed to make sure air circulates underneath the machine.
I have run the disk clean-up programme, and defragmented my HD in the hope that this would speed it up a little, but it hasn't done an awful lot, and tells me that I still have around 80% free space.
So, the question is, why is it overheating/running so slowly? Could it be that the Hauppage software just isn't working with my system? It opens automatically on loading, so I'm wondering if maybe this is part of the problem?
Any help? Please?

Its next on the list of things to do... I just wanted to make sure it didn't sound like something serious (read as: expensive) instead!**"Cheer up, it could get worse" - I cheered up, and look, it got worse!**0

Yeah, I noticed lol. To be honest, I've been using the machine at least daily, usually for a fair while at a time, since I got it, and I've had no problems with it at all up until now so I guess I can't complain too much!**"Cheer up, it could get worse" - I cheered up, and look, it got worse!**0
