Hi all
Thinking about buying a new bed but the sales people at the shop are confusing me... they say that the more pocket springs the softer the bed the less spring the firmer... some how don't feel this is right ? the bed im looking at has 800 pocket springs and 2 inches of memory foam.

they are talking absolute tosh.
springs can be hard or firm. it makes no difference as to how many there are.
you can get beds with 1500 springs and 4 inches of foam now.
that doesnt mean to say they are firmer or softer.Get some gorm.0 -
There is a guy on here called Tim Deegan. He is in the bed business and gives sound advice freely on here. Do a search for his posts.
Regarding the amount of pocket springs. I think Tim Deegan reckons that the more pocket springs there are, the weaker the actual springs are because more of them are crammed into the same area and this could result in the springs actually breaking. Some beds have 2400+ springs and I think around 1000 springs is about right. Tim also often says that 2- 2.5" of memory foam is enough, any deeper than that and you may feel too hot in bed due to the fact that memory foam, unlike springs, does not easily allow the passage of air and so it inhibits the cooling process.
At the end of the day, regardless of what sales people tell you, only you know what type of bed you feel comfortable on. I prefer a deep mattress that is quite soft and definitely with individual pockets springs. The pocket springs are a must for me because they prevent you rolling toward the middle of the bed. I also like the divan to be sprung and definitely do not like these wooden type beds with wooden slats beneath the mattress.
I hope that this helps you.0 -
many thanks steve.... will do a search.

Having recently bought a pocket sprung bed and having done lots of reasearch I think the advice you have been given is 'partly' true.
When you get above a 800 spring count the spring are put into the mattress in 2 layers (ie 1 layer of 800 or for a 1200 spring - 2 layers of 600). We were told that the more springs you have, the more support they offer as pocket springs contour the body. The length of the springs also makes a difference.
We went for a 1200 spring with 7cm memory foam.0 -

Thanks Steve:hello:
It's good to see that people do actually remember what I have said in these forums. Steve remembered so well that he was very nearly 100% on all aspects. However just one small thing I want to add. The number of pocket springs is around 1000 to an absolute maximum of 2000 in a king size mattress.0 -

I think the sales reps were actually describing a double sprung system to you. The springs on most pocket sprung mattresses are in one layer only.0 -

That's odd, we were only looking for a pocket sprung, there was even a 'model' of one in the shop0 -
