Selling the car but need new insurance

I'm selling our car soon, but need to renew the insurance. I found Tesco Value offers the best deal, and I have the option of paying one-off, or monthly terms (for a slight premium).
In general, would I be able to opt for the monthly terms, then cancel when I sell the vehicle? Would any balance be rounded to the cover ceased to be necessary?
Thank you!
