Bathroom refit / retile

Hi,

We're looking to get our bathroom sorted, but I just have a few questions I'd like to ask you guys.

From the 2 quotes we've had so far, both have said they would tile over the existing tiles. Is this any better/worse than taking the old ones off?

One of the quotes has the cost of the suite included and the other hasn't. Is it better to have the builder chap buy the suite or for us to get our own for him to fit? (It's just a Toilet Sink and Bath)

And finally, what do we need in terms of Corgi registered etc? The job is to re-tile, fit a new suite, a couple of new radiators and possibly a new hot water tank and perhaps a shower fitment too.

Any advice would be very useful!

Thanks

You dont need anyone Corgi reg, yes you can tile over tile, you need to de-grease, and prime the tiles before-hand.

Dare we ask what sort of prices you are being quoted??

I am having someone round later this week - I want bathroom tiles removing (hurrah!!:j ) and retiling. I want old bath, hand basin and loo removing & replacing. I want flooring changed. I want old radiator removing and a sleek modern upright one .... I think!

I have no idea what kind of price to expect. We don't mind buying bath etc and even tiles ourselves.

    Hi,

I personnally would want the old tiles removed, it'll add a days labour (depending on bathrrom size) if you don't want to do it yourself. There is a possiblity of having to patch up the wall also if you have them removed, so possible added cost there also of a plastering if the Tiler can't or won't do the patch up.

For the quotes you have to compare like for like, so I'd get quotes for just labour and materials for the actual installation. It doesn't really matter if you or the builder buy the suite/tiles, I'd personally buy them myself and as a Handyman myself I prefer the client to buy these items.

You don't need a Corgi registered plumber for the work that you require, so maybe look at a Handyman as rates are likely to be a bit lower.

As an idea Handyman labour is around £100-£150 per day obviously depending on where you are in the country.

  • lots of questions to answer here but i will try
1 yes you can tile on tile
2 i work with a plumber he rips the old tiles off
    old suite out
    bath in (ONE DAY MAX)
I tile Full bathroom floor to ceiling (supplying all adhesive/grout etc)
    TWO MORE DAYS
plumber fits sink pan and finishes
    (ONE DAYS LABOUR)
4 days work maybe 5 allowing for problems at £170 a day labour + vat +
    materials £1200 max
dont get a handyman on a day rate of say £90 to tile he will milk it for a week
I have been tiling for 10 years and it has to be a bloody big room to stretch
me to a 3rd day including the floor
    good luck:j
